The Opposite of Love is Not Hate, it’s Selfishness

I saw this title quote on Instagram a while back and it’s stayed with me.  The opposite of love is selfishness.

This touches on what love truly is. To me, it’s the recognizing of your true self, your essential self and seeing that it’s the same in the other and everyone else. Going beyond the physical form of the person, their life story, or the role they play as it relates to your life (i.e. what this person can do for me).  This is the source of true compassion for others.  When we are selfish, when we are trapped in the ego and the “story” of our life and past experiences and when we define ourselves by external dogma and society’s labels…when we act from that place, it’s not true love.  When we shed those things and remember who we all TRULY are, that we are connected to the energy of all creation and we are whole and complete just as we are…only then can we love truly.

So yes, to me, that the opposite of love is selfishness rings so truly. I want to live my life from a place that’s not being directed by my ego, and allowing the truth of who I really am—my spiritual self—to rule my life. To remember that I am more than my body and my mind and this life.  We all are.  And to see others in this way and to recognize them for their true spirit, that’s true love.  May I remember this and shed all my selfish tendencies and love others truly, seeing past their external form and down to their true self. May I practice this especially on those who have shared pasts with me, which can make it especially hard.
